Unconvincing

I was just walking,
lost in my thoughts
– the kind that I
won’t share, because
you think too highly
of me – and you were
there waiting, watching
me as I mindlessly
fantasized about
the days when we
would finally be
together, and
you had that smile,
that belongs only
to you, knowing
that when I looked
up, I would be caught,
red handed, with
my thoughts,
you knowing
that I know that
you know, and all I
would be able to
do is smile, shrug,
and pretend that
I was really just
lost in the Self.

  1. You know, maybe I’m reading into this piece, but I take it as a love poem. And if so, this is the most…elegant…love poem that I have ever set eyes upon. There are few poets I wish I could write like.

  2. I love this. Especially the phrase “knowing that when I looked up, I would be caught, red handed, with my thoughts…” – it’s not about getting caught, it’s about KNOWING you’d get caught – and a moment of silent agreement where everyone involved pretends it isn’t happening. So sweet.
