Dungeon Prompts: Freedom in the Modern World

This week’s prompt is:  Freedom in the Modern World

“If you want total security, go to prison. There you’re fed, clothed, given medical care and so on. The only thing lacking… is freedom.”  These are the words of President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

The argument  over the balance between security and freedom has been going on for as long as communities have existed.  Whether it is at the family, neighborhood, state, national or international level, it is a question that humans have always wrestled with.  But in the modern world, when there is little doubt that the government monitors all of our online activities, the threat to privacy violations, and our feelings about it, are laid at the doorstep of every person with a computer, credit card, bank account, driver’s license, etc., and it seems that we have made our peace with it. (Some would say we even embrace it through Facebook, Twitter, etc.)

The threat of terrorism seems to be enough for many to hand over their privacy, feeling that the government will make the right decisions on who the “bad guys” are.  But the bad guys are a constantly changing notion depending on who is in power.  All things considered, how important is privacy to you?

You don’t have to be a philosopher to have an opinion on the matter.  Each person is called upon to reevaluate and share their idea on what freedom means to them in the modern world.

Suggested Prompts:

*Are you willing to give up certain freedoms in the name of security?  What do you expect from your government?  Do you trust power to have your best interest in mind when making decisions?  Are you willing to live in a police state if that means that you can go about your life without fear of attack?  What does freedom mean to you?  Share your thoughts.

*Write a short story, poem, or share a picture or song that tells your opinion on the importance of freedom in the modern world.

*Any inspired offering that somehow relates to freedom in the modern world.

Dungeon Prompts are meant to open up the abandoned rooms inside ourselves and dust them off a bit.  Explore the recesses of your mind and get back with a poem, story, essay or creative offering.  Link your post to this specific prompt page and I’ll share your link back with our readers.
