Resting in a tension that I can’t turn from
As your grace overtakes my pride in stride
Your words form the parts and my psyche the sum

Caring not for the peace of whiskey or rum
Cool as I embrace sorrow’s light as my guide
Resting in a tension that I can’t turn from

Haunted, my strength is lost in your hum
There is no one left with whom I can confide
Your words form the parts and my psyche the sum

Lifting your glance to let it whither and run
For to my eyes you wouldn’t have them tied
Resting in a tension that I can’t turn from

Running from memories as fast as they come
As the splendor of Us has long since died
Your words form the parts and my psyche the sum

Having canvassed this world my options are one
In the shadow of your brilliance I will reside
Resting in a tension that I can’t turn from
Your words form the parts and my psyche the sum

  1. You worked the villanelle form beautiful as you developed your theme in your poem. I just love the line “Your words form the parts and my psyche the sum. ” Poignant, sad, yet VERY beautiful poem.
