Dungeon Prompts: Secrets

This week’s prompt is:   Secrets

“And when at last you find someone to whom you feel you can pour out your soul, you stop in shock at the words you utter— they are so rusty, so ugly, so meaningless and feeble from being kept in the small cramped dark inside you so long.”

― Sylvia Plath, The Unabridged Journals of Sylvia Plath

“I thought about how there are two types of secrets: the kind you want to keep in, and the kind you don’t dare to let out.”

― Ally Carter, Don’t Judge a Girl by Her Cover

“All families have their secrets, most people would never know them, but they know there are spaces, gaps where the answers should be, where someone should have sat, where someone used to be. A name that is never uttered, or uttered just once and never again. We all have our secrets.”

― Cecelia Ahern, The Book of Tomorrow

Secrets are lying everywhere among us.  While some of us strive on the power to possess a secret, many others want nothing to do with them.  To some a secret strengthens the bond between friends while to others strength is living a life where secrets are not necessary.  What do secrets mean to you?

Suggested Prompts:

*Are you a secret keeper?  Do you have a lot hidden away that you share with no one or do you have certain friends that you tell everything to?  Do you have the confidence of others knowing that your ears lead to a closed vault or are you known for your secret broadcasting system?  Are you offended when you suspect others are keeping secrets from you, or do you not want to have anything to do with things that are kept hidden?  What do secrets mean to you?

*Write a short story, poem, or share a picture or song that talks about your feelings on secrets.

*Any inspired offering that somehow relates to secrets.

Dungeon Prompts are meant to open up the abandoned rooms inside ourselves and dust them off a bit.  Explore the recesses of your mind and get back with a poem, story, essay or creative offering.  Link your post to this specific prompt page and I’ll share your link back with our readers.

To participate, all you’ll need to do is:

1.            Tag your post with: “DungeonPrompts”

2.            Link back to this page in the body of your post *

3.            Dive deep within and give us a glimpse of your soul!**

*note: If the pingback doesn’t work, then please leave the link to your post in the comment section.

**If you don’t have a blog please feel free to join the discussion in the comment section.

About the author

I am a King without a Kingdom, in a world with many masters, wrapped in the spoils of a jealous heart, and my people’s callous laughter.

  1. Secrets hold a mystic appearance that intrigues the eye of anyone who dares to know the truth it contains. Though, how can you put truth and secret in the same sentence? Secrets are powerful as they can relieve you of something or condemn you further to say the least. Some secrets are made to share and some are better left hidden inside that infamous closet of skeletons.

I, myself, find that I omit things rather than necessarily titling them a secret (even though they most likely could be equal to one another ;)) And when I mention omit, I speak about things that I find better left unsaid, things that are not relevant, but that perhaps could mark a difference in how someone perceives me. I noticed this actually recently and must add that I think it is greatly linked to my mechanism of not wanting to appear vulnerable or feel it. I find myself keeping things out and perhaps turning them into secrets (obviously, not critical ones that close ones might not eventually find out about) for the sheer purpose of not wanting people knowing my whole story. After all, what is the fun in knowing every last detail of someone? That again, however, can be a defense mechanism.

Everyone has different reasons to keep a secret or decide to share it. I myself keep mine without them making me blink or twitch. They simply are one more piece of information or fact about me that unless needed to be confronted will ultimately only have to respond to me. If and when I do share a secret it is with someone very close. And secrets really are not more than just a fact about me, one that I eventually decided that person is worthy of knowing, because they value me for who I am rather than by the information I have decided to share with them.

I think everyone has a secret and should have one, even if its one with minimal amount of importance. Keeping a secret can build your inner endurance, it can make you stronger and give you the rushing feeling that only YOU are certain of particular set of information that the person next to you lacks.
