Dungeon Prompts: Desire

leaf“I have outlasted all desire,
My dreams and I have grown apart;
My grief alone is left entire,
The gleamings of an empty heart.

The storms of ruthless dispensation
Have struck my flowery garland numb,
I live in lonely desolation
And wonder when my end will come.

Thus on a naked tree-limb, blasted
By tardy winter’s whistling chill,
A single leaf which has outlasted
Its season will be trembling still.”

– Alexander Pushkin

This week’s prompt is: Desire

“The world is little, people are little, human life is little. There is only one big thing – desire.”

– Willa Cather, The Song of the Lark

“There are two tragedies in life. One is to lose your heart’s desire. The other is to gain it.”

– George Bernard Shaw, Man and Superman

“Desiring another person is perhaps the most risky endeavor of all. As soon as you want somebody—really want him—it is as though you have taken a surgical needle and sutured your happiness to the skin of that person, so that any separation will now cause a lacerating injury.”

– Elizabeth Gilbert, Committed: A Skeptic Makes Peace with Marriage

 Today’s Prompt:

Normally we forget, while trapped in the grips of desire, that all things come as a packaged deal.  We can’t just have a piece of a thing; we must take the whole of it.  And when we finally get something for which we have long coveted, it is often more than we’re prepared to receive.  This week’s prompt is “desire.”  Take it in any direction you’d like.

The article that you link to this prompt should be a new post written specifically for this assignment.

I am a King without a Kingdom, in a world with many masters, wrapped in the spoils of a jealous heart, and my people’s callous laughter.
