For the Children

How do we fight when words are not enough

and decency is not a universal imperative,

just something to divide those who can get things done

from those who are outdated, when the idea of

God is dead to most, and the idea of being good for good’s sake

is not a philosophy remembered? – we are a people

who’s humanity has passed, intellectually numbed by

virtual reality’s smothering of what it means to be –

now just a dream is our virtue – fear is all we have

left to offer – maybe it’s all we ever really had –

– but for the children, or because of them,

we smile.

  1. Very powerful poem. I’m hoping that the situation is not this bleak although sometimes it sure feels like it. Regardless, I’m glad the children still receive smiles. Good for the child and good for the giver.
